Low temperatures were forecast the night before the launch, and engineers from Morton Thiokol, the subcontractor that designed the booster rockets, recommended not to launch below 53°F. NASA disregarded this recommendation. Just over one minute into the flight, the Challenger suffered from a catastrophic explosion, killing everyone on board.
