Case Study: Tesla's Misapplication of Wear-Leveling

27 January 2020 by Phillip JohnstonThere have been reports from Tesla repair professionals that older Tesla Model S & X Media Control Units [MCUs] are wearing out their NAND-based eMMC memory. When the eMMC fails, drivers cannot use the in-vehicle display, climate control, autopilot, or lighting control. While the vehicle can still operate when the MCU flash fails, it can no longer be charged. While Tesla will replace the MCU if it’s under the warranty period, many of these vehicles are outside of warranty because of their age.
