29 January 2025 by Phillip JohnstonThe European Common Charger Directive is in effect (as of 28 December 2024, laptops have until 28 April 2026 to comply). Many consumer devices sold in the EU must now provide a USB-C port for wired charging. Beyond simply mandating a USB-C connector, the directive aims to eliminate the use of proprietary chargers solid with devices. Standard charging (≤ 15W) must work with standard USB power supply options that supports “fast charging” (> 15W) must fully support the USB Power Delivery (USB PD) standard.
